Transforming a Family Room: A Moody Academia Makeover

Embark on a thrilling adventure with me as we turn an ordinary family room into a striking, dark, and sophisticated domain! Starting from the selection of the most suitable paint shade to the implementation of smart DIY projects, I am going to give you the tips and tricks that will help you inspire your own home makeover.

Introduction to the Family Room Makeover

Get ready for the adventure of updating our family room! It has been a long time that this area hasn’t been properly revived, and now I have settled down on taking the aggressive path. Having distinguished characteristics, such as the built-in and a small but warm bar area, this room is really the center of our home. It is where we hang out after a tiring day, and hence it should be designed in a way that signifies comfort and elegance.

The Inspiration Behind the Design

This design idea for the revamp is sourced direct from a closet that I recently made into a bar space. This closet has such great picture frame molding which I intend to put around the family room. This is the design element that I appreciate so much for it brings a sense of elegance to the space that it looks more curated and intentional.

Assessing the Current Space

Before plunging into the remodeling process, I scrutinized the room very well. The walls were lifeless and colorless, which contributed to the cramped atmosphere I was feeling. The furniture already present in space was clunky, which is fine, but it totally fails to take advantage of the room's depth where it should be located... I imagined a better room where I could rearrange the furniture to turn it into a more corporeal and cozy space.

Clearing Out the Room

As the first step of transformation, I initiated it with the process of emptying the whole space. It was about giving away things that were of no use for us and taking the decision regarding the items which can be kept for some time. Starting with an absolute empty space is very important; only in this way can you think of various possibilities for the arrangement of the room.

Choosing the Perfect Paint

After the room was vacated, the subsequent task was to find out the ideal paint color. This time, I went for Benjamin Moore's Regal Select Interior paint, which I found in the 'Intrigue' shade. It is a very mysterious color because it is a mixture of green, blue, and gray, and therefore, it helps to create a sense of space without being overwhelming. I chose eggshell paint for the walls, while satin was used for the trim in order to have the contrast and visual interest.

Painting the Walls and Trim

When the paint has been selected, the next step is to remove the plastic covering from the work area. The happiness I get as I finish up a painting job within a day is overwhelming. It seems like a canvas that goes smoothly through a brush, which then makes the process of the application be really quick and effective. With two coats for walls and a fresh coat for built-ins, the room was gradually showing its life.

The Impact of Color

The change was instantaneous. The different color newly emerged, which made it feel warm, and welcoming was the bold and cozy touch. The change of perception due to paint is sometimes so vivid that it seems incredible. The stunning color was the wow factor I dreamed of, and it served as the perfect background for the remaining design elements to show off.

Adding Picture Frame Molding

In order to beautify the space further, I opted for putting picture frame molding on the walls. This included the task of measuring and cutting trim pieces, which I found to be a fulfilling DIY project. With the use of a miter box, the process was simple, and the outcome was a breathtaking three-dimensional effect that added to the room's personality.

Finalizing the Sofa Choice

Sofa selection was of prime importance for the newly designed layout. Following the trials I went through with different alternatives, there was a model I came across that was both cozy and the matching size for the room required. To add the sofa more to the space, I went for customization, choosing long-lasting material that would stand the test of time. The family room anchor piece being this sofa, it will serve the dual purpose of function and attractive design.

Rug Selection and Placement

Selecting a rug is one of the most important steps in the process of making the room feel complete. I decided on a 9x12 rug that aligns all the furniture pieces and thus makes a space feel well-defined. Besides the size, the color and material have a big impact on the overall room perception.

Selecting the right rug for the space

The carpet that I decided on possesses a combination of green, blue, and cream shades that blend perfectly with the new sofa and also introduce warmth. A rug that is chosen right can bring together the whole set, thus creating a small and comfortable area.Really remember the rug tape for holding down it and to avoid any tripping dangers!

Introducing the New Sofa

The introduction of the new sofa has been crucial. I chose a model that is not only beautiful but also is practical, which is appropriate for both lying down and entertaining. The fabric, which is tough to clean and is also resistant to water, is ideal for a very active family room.

Unwrapping the new sofa

The design of the sofa is such that it is perfect for an open room layout, thus making the flow of light in the room better. The sofa has enough depth to comfortably curl up, which makes it an ideal seat for movie nights. I admire the way this piece establishes the atmosphere for the whole room.

Selecting Additional Seating

A swivel chair in the same color as the sofa is a brilliant idea! This armchair provides the seating arrangement with a sense of flexibility. Indeed, the swivel chairs are great choices because they are the best for turning around quietly while carrying on a conversation and they also facilitate movement in the room. The comfort level of this chair could be compared to that of a cloud! It is a completely comfortable and soft chair!

Adding a swivel chair for additional seating

The combination of various seating alternatives is the best way to achieve a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Mixing styles and fabrics could be a new idea of keeping the single look dynamic and attractive. Experiments like that not only enrich comfort but also promote social interaction.

Hiding Cords and Media Storage Solutions

I came up with a great solution to the problem of dealing with cords. I bought three sideboards from Amazon and pushed them together to make a long media unit. This arrangement offers huge storage space and keeps the room organized.

Setting up the media storage solution

Hiding all TV cables and other electronic devices in a closed media storage cabinet is one more way to achieve a neat, clean look. It is definitely a budget-friendly hack that does not compromise your sense of style. Moreover, the additional surface space can be used for some decorative accents thus completing the look of the space.

Choosing a Coffee Table

I made a decision to reintroduce my original round coffee table, which has been very helpful to us for many years. Its shape is perfect with the sectional sofa and, at the same time, it helps people walk freely around the seating area.

Reintroducing the round coffee table

The table's dark walnut shade is in perfect harmony with the new decor. Coffee table selection is a must as it should suit your home style and improve the function. The coffee table with the proposed design would be an appropriate place for drinks, books, and decor.

Decorating with Art

Personalizing your space with art is an amazing option. I chose a piece that has both warm and cool colors, blending in with the room's color palette. This piece not only adds character to the space but also serves as a point of interest above the sofa.

Hanging art above the sofa

Check out the art that goes with it; you can experiment by simply combining various shapes and colors. One can also agree with that; I am a person who likes old-time pictures of the countryside, which add quality to the space without being attached to any specific brand or current trend.

Adding Wall Sconces for Ambiance

As a step to be done for such a purpose, I placed the battery harmonious wall sconces to the left and right of the artwork as if they were left to the viewer's choice. Those wall sconces made it light up in a very special way with their seeping of light through the space between the jacket of the art. Sconce's layered lighting, which is a key factor in created a cozy atmosphere, is attached to it.

Sconces light the artwork with profile that approaches a wide angle, not only presenting it effectively but also providing various options for lighting. The ability to regulate the color of the light gives the room a sense of warmth and makes it welcoming all the time.

Final Touches and Accent Furniture

In the sentence above, you have used the word "pos" which means "yes" or "true". The sentence is indeed positive. In the context of the dialog, the speaker thinks that the listener's idea is good or true. The correct answer is: Yes, it is a positive sentence.

Adding accent furniture to complete the look

The exact same materials fulfill the function of thoroughly balancing the design and at the same time, they also provide practical light solutions. Different items of furniture with varying heights and textures can easily be layered to form a beautiful and intentional environment that looks like it has been well thought out.

Creating a Cozy Reading Nook

The nook for reading is among the places I love most in the room. I arranged a cozy chair beside the window, which lets in the natural light during the day. It becomes a good spot for reading a novel wrapped in a blanket by simply adding a small lamp on a side table next to the chair.

Setting up a cozy reading nook

Establishing a reading nook is not merely a matter of obtaining a chair; it's a question of the general ambiance. Mixing in some soft fabrics, a warm lamp, and maybe a throw blanket will augment this space's inviting and relaxing qualities. It's all about achieving that perfect equilibrium!

Selecting Window Treatments

A huge step in the complete journey was picking up the suitable treatments for the sliding door window. Quite naturally, I derived them from the living room, where I already had identical smart shades of Serena, thus achieving uniformity.

Installing smart shades on the sliding door

The color of the shades is warm white, which is good for diffusing light and brightening up the space creating a bright yet cozy atmosphere. I chose a fabric from The Mirage collection that feels soft to the touch and adds to the room's overall aesthetic. Although I looked at blackouts, I chose the diffused light effect that I like most as it gives warmth to the space but not at the expense of enough brightness.

Styling the Built-Ins

The customization of the built-ins was among the things I enjoyed the most in the project. They seem to be the new attraction in the room. I searched for affordable secondhand books, boxes, and a few pieces of art to make the decor look more decided.

Styling the built-ins with books and decor

In order to have equal and vibrant show, I used different types of book orientation. Some were stacked horizontally whereas other were displayed vertically, thus providing a dynamic visual flow. The inclusion of little decorative objects gives a particular character and breaks the monotonous line of books, thus creating a welcoming and friendly space.

Finishing Touches on Decor

Now that the major components have been positioned, this is the opportune moment to pay attention to the last detail. The decorative pillows I opted for blended with the room's colors and I did a mix of different textures and patterns to create a cozy atmosphere. Using three pillows on each side of the couch gives both depth and comfort.

Arranging decorative pillows on the sofa

Also, I structured the fresh florals and vases on the coffee table and console to vivify the area. Such tiny features contribute to the general outlook and give the space a sense of human presence and invitation.

It has been extremely satisfying working on this project, and I take pride in the transformation of the family room. The mixture of striking paint, classic molding, as well as stylish accessories has made the space a warm and friendly retreat. Cozy family room after the makeover

I am waiting for the day when I will have my perfect dream home, which is 100% Scandinavian besides a few vintage pieces thrown in the mix. Also, the limited edition cracked ceramic pots are featured on the shelf next to the jewelry box, which I made from recycled paper, and then painted over.

Conclusion and Upcoming Projects

As closing this family room renovation, I am proud to let you know that there are more things to be done. Our next stop will be outside the house where we will do some marvellous changes in the patios.
